My husband and I just returned from a weekend getaway in Napa, CA. It was a Christmas present to him from me! (pretty smart, huh?) It was surprisingly affordable, the airfare from Ontario to Oakland is cheap and so is a rental car for the weekend. We splurged on a nice hotel, but there are many inexpensive places available. The town of Napa is very interesting and a nice blend of the old and the new. Needless to say, the countryside is so picturesque, with miles of vineyards enclosed by lush forested hills. The vines are all barren now, but blooming at their feet are brilliant wild mustard flowers. The sky was impressive with the threat of rain, but it stayed dry. It was very inspiring scenery. Of course wherever we go, quilters must check in with the locals. I was able to visit two very nice quilt shops on this trip and pick up 2 bags of fabric that I don't need. It was either that or a bunch of weird wine accessories. By the way, nobody we spoke to up there had ever heard of Temecula wines.

Stitched on NPR January 17th

Hello friends,

Tuesday, January 17th (tomorrow) NPR will be talking about the movie Stitched on "The State of Things". Both Jena Moreno (the director) and I will be interviewed by the host Frank Stasio at 12:00 noon EST.

Last weekend there were six showings of Stitched in the Chapel Hill area and they were well attended. Jena and I were at all of them to answer questions after the movie.

Stitched has now been accepted into seven film festivals and has won prizes at two festivals. It is a fun quirky movie about quilting that follows three art quilters for one year as they create their quilts for the biggest annual quilt show in the world. The quilt show takes place in Houston, TX and hosts between 55,000 - 60,000 visitors. It is the largest conference held in Houston every year.

Strathmore 2012 Online Workshops

End of Year Party

I think everyone that braved the dark and the elements to make it to the end of the year party for Textures had a great time. If the food was any indication, that was definitely true. Shrimp, baby quiches, great food from Mr. Kabob, desserts galore among other things.

Of course, no photos were taken so there is no pictorial blackmail available for the gift exchange and grab. (Isn't that why we all have phones with cameras, so we can take those pictures?!!!) Oh well, maybe next year someone will write a reminder on their hand and we will have something more than words to post.

Hope everyone had a wonderful time and we will see you in the new year in February if not before at Road to California!

Quilting Arts Article

I had the opportunity last night to read the preliminary version of an article that will be coming out in the next issue of Quilting Arts. The article will feature David and myself as two artists that share a space.

I was very impressed with the great job that Ellen did in editing to make a cohesive article. Quilting Arts sent us a list of questions that we were both to fill out independent from each other. It was interesting to see what answers were different and which ones were close to the same.

It has pictures of our new Noble Seasons: Winter quilts as well as a "before" picture of our studio. For those of you who don't know, that would be "before" the flood. It was actually a leaky pipe, but since I had to replace the carpet I am referring to it as a flood. I do love the new studio with the hard floor and new paint, so I guess it was worth all the stress and grief.

If you see the article please post your comments. It should be out about mid-to-late January as it is the February/March issue.

Quilting Season 2011

I just realized how quickly our next exhibition is coming upon us! I have completed the top of the quilt and am ready to begin quilting it. I am really looking forward to immersing myself in this stage of the quilt, because I have been deprived of quilting for several months. After 4 bridal showers, 4 rehearsal dinners, one trip to Maui, Beverly Hills, Temecula, and San Diego for four weddings and their receptions; several weekends of wedding-decor sewing, altering one wedding dress, one groom's suit, and two mother of the bride dresses, not to mention shopping and agreeing on multiple appropriate wedding/shower/rehearsal outfits for a 13 y/o girl (and myself) it is finally the end of Wedding Season 2011 in our household! I guess I should be thankful I didn't have to make the bridesmaids' dresses. All this while implementing a new software program at work and selling my house. I officially declare it "Quilting Season 2011" in my household!

Adding A Sleeve

AQS has a good video on YouTube for adding a sleeve to your quilt. It is features Bonnie Browning as the demonstrator. If you struggle with exactly the best way to hang your quilt or fiber art her instructions break down the steps and simplifies the process.

I have some recommendations that I use that are a little different from what Bonnie presents in her video.

* I always put my sleeve about 1 inch below the top edge instead of her recommended 1/2 inch. This still keeps the top edge from flopping over (if the sleeve is too low) but ensures that the sleeve will never show above the art piece when hanging.

* I recommend that the sleeve length is a minimum of 2-4 inches shorter that the width of the quilt. Be sure to center the sleeve on the quilt so the "pull back" from the sides is even. This allows the gallery or show to hang your quilt with out the "hanger" showing. The slat can be close to the outer edge of the quilt (1/2 inch) but the sleeve should leave ample room for accessing either the D-ring, drilled nail holes or the gallery's own preferred hanging method.

If slats are used in the sleeve, D-rings mounted towards the end or drilled holes in the end of the slats are easily accessed for nails or hooks. I currently make my sleeves about 4 inches shorter. This allows 2 inches per side and still gives support too the edges. I am then able to use multiple types of mounting systems on the slat if the gallery has a specific requirement.

* The preferred sleeve style for a large or heavy piece is a 2 piece sleeve with a space of about 2-4 inches between. This allows for a center support if the gallery deems it necessary.

David and I attended the SAQA meeting at the Front Porch Gallery. Several tips were given by Julie Weaverling, Assistant Director, for hanging in galleries. It was a great meeting with lots of tips and information. The Front Porch Gallery preference is for the D-rings but she reminded all the artists to check with the gallery they are working with for specific hanging requirements.

Good news from Phyllis

Just heard from Suzanne, at Empty Spools Seminars in Asilomar. She asked me if I would be an Artist in Residence for the 2013 Spring sessions. Yeah! I was thrilled. So we picked the 2nd Session which is the first of March, 2013.

By the way, for the 2012 group of classes, I am signed up for the 1st Session. I am on a waiting list for Esterita Austin, but Hollis is also there at the same time, so if I can not get into Esterita's class, they have me in Hollis's class.

If anyone wants to join me for that session, let me know. I will be taking my van and there is plenty of room for all our machines and "stuff". There are many other good teachers listed for that session. Take a look at www.emptyspoolsseminars.com

Opportunities in Memberships

In pondering what I wanted to post about this month I came to a conclusion. I realized the opportunities that have been presented to David and myself by being members of other organizations. David and I are members of Visions Art Museum, Quilts on the Wall, SAQA, and of course Textures.

We have been able to display and sell small pieces of fiber art at the Visions Art Museum and take advantage of their critique group. It is a definite advantage to be a member of such a group. You get unbiased input from people that haven't had their nose buried in a piece for days on end. They have no emotional attachment to the piece like I get at times. We have had great input on areas of design that we were struggling with.

Quilts on the Wall has provided the opportunity to grow both as an artist and as a contributing member of the group. It can be a little scary volunteering for a position or a "helper". It really stretches you in ways you would not have if left to your own devices and I am grateful. It is also incredible to see the work of other artists in all stages of progress and see how they solved design issues.

The SAQA membership has also brought unexpected opportunities. David and I like to attend the SAQA reception at Long Beach every year. This year, after showing our quilts, we were approached by Pokey Bolton for an article in Quilting Arts Magazine. Our quilts were sent to them for photographing and I think we will be in the Nov/Dec 2011 issue.

I would never have thought that David and I would be in QA Magazine. It is one of my favorites and always so inspiring.
My advice is to take every opportunity that presents itself for memberships and volunteering. You never know where the path will lead.

Cafe Aroma Artist Reception

Helene, David and I had a wonderful time at the artist reception at Cafe Aroma. Frank, the manager, put out an amazing display of food for us and he even provided the champagne. It was an unbelievably beautiful day in Idyllwild and the temperature was perfect.

We were so pleased to have some familiar faces at the show (thank you Phyllis and Pam). It was incredibly fun to talk to so many of the locals who came to see the exhibit. We got to spend time with a lot of wonderful people and the staff at Cafe Aroma could not have treated us any better.

David and I have not been to Idyllwild in several years, but we have plans to go back soon. There were so many things we were not able to see and galleries we could not visit.

I am hoping that Helene got some photos that we can post later. I of course, had my camera, but took pictures outside and NOTHING inside. ARGGGHHH. I will try to do better next time. I promise.

Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar

I just returned from the amazing Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar(Pacific Grove) Calif. What a wonderful place to take a class, work all day, have all your meals fixed and ready for you, and see quilt related programs in the evenings. I loved every minute of the 5 days.

But the best part was my wonderful teacher, Hollis Chatelain! She was soooo nice, kind, helpful, and positive with everyone in our class. We not only learned a lot about color, contrast, and using the dyes, we also did 2 days of stitching on what we painted. As many of you know, she is the best of the best, so 5 days with her, picking her brain and getting individual help, was a treat to say the least!!

See the 2 photos....one is Hollis helping Marilyn with "Earnest" in the background. (If you have not see Earnest in person, it is a must. There are 37 figures of children stitched into his face and around the edges.) It is AMAZING!

Exhibit at Cafe Aroma

LivingTextures: Cafe Aroma exhibit

David and I are very excited to be invited to participate in an exhibit with Helene at Cafe Aroma. We just heard from Helene as she was coming down the hill from Idyllwild. The exhibit’s installed! The manager, Frank, is very happy with how it looks and Helene said it was getting a lot of interest from the patrons that were in Cafe Aroma while they were installing the exhibit.

There will be an artist reception on Sunday, June 12th, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. I hope that if you have that afternoon free that you will join us in beautiful Idyllwild. I have looked at the menu of Cafe Aroma and it looks wonderful. Fresh air, great food and art quilts. What more could you want? Oh, wait, I know MUSIC! The 8th annual Jazz festival will also be happening that weekend. If you can’t make it on Sunday, the Jazz festival runs from the 10th to the 12th. Come up earlier for the music and still see the exhibit.

Update: We have a two month exhibit. We will be displayed until the end of July.

Working on it!

It feels good to finally have an inspiration and a plan for my next piece. I conceived the idea somewhere between nonstop working at my job and getting my house ready for sale. I am happy to say my old home looks better than it ever did when I lived in it. Well maybe not happy, but proud. And exhausted!
Next I spent a couple of hours auditioning fabrics. I am trying to use fabric from my stash exclusively. What a concept. It always amazes me how long it takes to pull the fabrics for a project. I forget about that and just recall the time it takes to assemble the quilt. Photographing it always takes longer than I expect it will, too. Heck! The whole thing takes a long time!!!
I decided to use EQ7 to draft the pattern, just because I haven't done a quilt on EQ7 in a while and miss playing around on it. It also helped me try out some of my design ideas. If you are going to use the program to actually make the quilt, versus just doodling creatively with it, you must be very meticulous to get everything just right in the end. Makes sense, right? So now I am taping together 48 pieces of paper on my large kitchen island to make one giant piece of paper. Oh! and I forgot to wipe it off first......oops.

On Drive(ing).

The other day I was driving along, maximizing my learning time by listening to a iTunesU podcast on Pathophysiology when I realized that my brain was just stuffed. Full-up. Literally jam-packed. It wasn't going to take in even one more tiny scrap of information no matter how I tried to push and shove it down that convoluted funnel into my brain.

Don't get me wrong- I'm studying for a second degree in health and nutrition and I absolutely love it. But, I've been focusing so hard for so long on learning, I'd forgotten that every system in our body needs time for rest and regeneration. Non-negotiable rest.

My drive to move forward had become blinding to all else and I was chugging interminably forward- consuming every spare moment with purposeless productivity at the expense of everything else. I couldn't even carry on a conversation that didn't have something to do with nutrition. I was driving my boyfriend crazy and some people had started crossing the street to avoid me (maybe a slight exaggeration, but only slight!)

With my blind drive, I had shoved aside the concept of balance, of regenerative relaxation and instead enshrined "being productive" as the all encompassing goal. I listened to podcasts on my latest obsession as I drove, trying to fit in as much time as possible in a panicky 'sponge' mode: 'I must soak it all in- hurry! There's not enough time to get it all! You must move on or you'll never keep up! HurryHurryHurry!

Thinking about this while driving I came upon a sudden realization:

"Girl, that's NOT healthy"

Yes, in order to get things done you do need to prioritize, but first you need to understand why and if these things are truly important to you. I've gotten so caught up in the motions of being the "best" and most productive that I forgot why I wanted to do these things in the first place:

"I want to be healthy and help those around me achieve a healthy ….balance…. in their lives"… hmmmm… maybe I should re-evaluate.

So I pulled over, parked the car and went for a walk- a loooong walk. Without my iPod, without my books, without all of my tools and all those busy thoughts. And you know, the world didn't end. In fact, just that little break helped me clear my mind and reset my priorities and get back to actually enjoying what I was doing without that ever present element of panic.

I think that we all get caught up some times in trying to be productive- especially in an area we love. We feel a duty to 'make the most of it'- and that can often get in the way of our best work.

Breathe. Step back and relax.

Put down your fabric, your shears, your paints, the tools of your trade, push away from your computers, stop listening to that podcast. Go, walk outside, take a deep breath, take one step and then another and let your mind just flow along without an agenda. Trust me, you need it- and you'll enjoy your work again and be a whole lot more productive later.

Talented Members

We are so blessed to have so many members that have talents in other areas and are willing to share. We have some members who have an amazing talent with a camera. Sharon, you in particular have a special touch with your digital camera.

Our group is lucky enough to have some members with graphic and web design talent. Catherine and Helene are going to do us proud this year with their additional contributions to the group. Catherine has been generous enough to offer her skills in building us our own website. She presented her preliminary design at our member meeting on Friday and everyone agreed that it is going to look fabulous. She has some great ideas that will help give us a more polished and professional image.

The meeting went well and everyone is clear on their upcoming assignments as we head towards getting our show up in October. Several members showed finished quilts for our special exhibit that we are going to call "Wings N Things". The challenge was to do a quilt that features insects in some form in a 12 x 18 inch portrait format. All shared ideas they have for their main exhibition piece. I personally feel that this is going to be a great show for 2011.

Reel Starz! is Going to Paducah

My Reel Starz! quilt was accepted into the AQS Paducah show and is on the way now. It felt like sending a child off into the unknown when I handed it over to the Post Office for it's journey to Kentucky! Wish us luck! The show is April 27th - 30th.

A Handy Tool!

I love my sewing machine, but was was loving it a little less due to problems I had removing the throat plate easily. One of the screws was in a position that made using the screwdriver so awkward and difficult! Arrgh! The dealer showed me this little gizmo he picked up somewhere and it worked great! The problem is he didn't know where to obtain one, but I think I found a source online. I am ordering one today!

It is a plastic disc about the size of a backgammon playing piece. It has a small blade embedded in one side. You just lay it on the throatplate and rotate the disc to loosen the screw. How easy is that?

Exercise Your “Done” Muscle

A lot of us have problems getting things finished. Several reasons come to mind: procrastination, the need to be perfect, distractions by other things, failure to prioritize. Here are eight tips for exercising what I call your “done” muscle.

1. Get clear about what it is that you are trying to accomplish. Once you have clarity around your goals and/or a particular project, it’s much easier to move forward. As you work, keep your eye on the prize. This will help you progress.

2. Break your project down into manageable tasks. When you look at a goal or a specific project, it can seem overwhelming. If you can break it down into bite-size pieces, it’s always easier to see how you can accomplish it.

3. Look for where you need help. Just because you have a big project, doesn’t mean that you need to do it all yourself. Remember, it’s not necessary to know how to do everything, just what needs to be done.

4. Prioritize what needs to be done. This can apply to a specific project or your daily “to do” list. It’s easy to look for the quick and uncomplicated things to do each day so you can check them off the list. The problem is you aren’t really accomplishing what you need to accomplish. What you should be doing is tackling those projects that move you towards completing your goal.

5. Consider the ROI. That’s Return on Investment. You can look at your tasks and see if time spent doing these tasks is worth your time. Maybe you should delegate the tasks or not even do them at all.

6. Finish what you start. Make that your goal. Really look around at how many people actually finish what they set out to do. Many people say they are going to do something and don’t ever complete it.

7. Remember good enough is often good enough. Sometimes we spend so much time aiming for perfection that we don’t accomplish our goals.

8. Don’t over-think everything. As the Nike ad says, “Just do it.”

Quilts On the Wall meeting

For those of you that are double members in Textures and Quilts on the Wall the next QOTW meeting will be a good one to attend. The "Bridges" quilts will be turned in and your only chance to see all of them before the jury process and they head off to Long Beach in July. I am really excited, I have heard from Jo, the exhibit coordinator, that there are some great quilts. She has seen some of them in photos for the publicity shots that will go to Quilts, Inc.

David and I will also be attending the Exhibitions meeting that is before the general meeting. This should be very interesting also, with lots of new info. After the general meeting we are going to check out two new shops in the general area that Rose and some of the other quilters go to for supplies. I have seen the business information for them, and they look very interesting if you like Kimono silks and ephemera for projects. One is a reuse/recycle place.

Show and Tell

I really enjoyed the meeting yesterday, despite the wild and crazy temperature fluctuations in our room! I especially enjoyed the show and tell. We got to see some beautiful quilts. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions on how to proceed with mine. Today I am working out the final design details for my bug quilt. I have decided to print some of it on the computer and some will be applique-fused. I'm also going to experiment with some layering of sheers and OF COURSE there will be metallic threads in there somewhere!

Time is a ticking! We are heading to our first formal meeting of the year. Hope you all have been doing some wonderful things and getting great ideas for this year's show. Carol will give us a status update on our venue. Don't forget to bring your fee for the meeting room for the year.

Road 2 CA Fun!

January's Road To California show was a great time. Linda & I met up with Trish & Helene for lunch and to compare our new treasures - see Helene taking a moment with her new acquisitions!

There were amazing quilts and of course wonderful vendors. I believe we all did our part to support the economy! I was honored to have my Life Lilies quilt accepted into the show and it was great to see our No Strings Attached challenge displayed.

Hi Everyone and Happy New Year!

I believe this is going to be a great year and many of our members will become more well-known successful artists. Being asked (even at the last minute) to participate in Road is a wonderful way to start the year. I'm looking forward to your comments on the show. Going this year did not work out for me.

Welcome back Ildiko. A big thank you for the beautiful embroidered lace ornaments.

Our meetings ... will begin at 5:00 PM this year. This is a small change so be sure and change your calendar. Of course, early is always better than late:)

How many of you have decided on your "insect" for our group challenge? So far I have not heard any duplications. We have ants, tomato worm, dragonfly and others... Size is 12" x 18" - portrait.

Road to California 2011

Road to California quilt show was this week and weekend. For those of you who were unable to attend, you missed a fabulous show. The quilts were really a notch above (in my opinion) from previous years. Everyone seems to be using those expensive new machines with the stitch regulators to the max. The quilting on the quilts this year were amazing.

I also noticed that there were a lot more men submitting quilts to this show. I did not spend a lot of time looking at the actual quilt information cards unless a quilt caught my eye. I seemed to notice the ones that the men submitted. Perhaps because there was a tendency for those to have more quilting or an unusual design perspective.

I attended the show this year with Helene and we had a great time together. We met up for lunch with Linda and Gail and got to compare purchases and favorite vendors. Helene and I were drawn to the same quilts and vendors so it was a very good match for seeing the show. Neither of us felt like we missed anything because the other was not interested.

Our exhibit for Textures "No Strings Attached" was at the show. It was a last minute addition, so we missed being in the catalog, but we had a great location. All the quilt-lets showed very well.

Linda and Gail are taking the Gregory Case photography class on Sunday so it will be very interesting to compare notes. I took it in a previous year when he was just starting on his teaching at quilting venues. It was a great class and I recommend it to any one wanting to take their own quilt photos. Not only should your general photos improve but you will also have a better chance of getting accepted into juried shows.

It's been a while!

Just thought that I would add some information about some great new (or not so new) sites that I like to visit. One of them is 3 Creative Studios. Not only do they have a wonderful blog, website and challenges area, but they have a great free projects area. If you are looking for something for a gift or just want a spark to your creativity, this is a great place to look. Hop on over and see what wonderful things they are talking about.

Don't forget that we have some deadlines coming up. Is everyone working on their large piece for the next Textures show? How about the smaller challenge piece? I must admit that I have only been working on them in my head. Not even any sketches done yet.

I have been working madly on my "Bridges" exhibit quilt for Quilts on the Wall. I think that is taking all my creative energy right now. What is everyone else working on?

Don't forget that Road to California is coming up this next week for classes and the show opens on Thursday. There is bound to be lots of inspiration there. Hope to run into a lot of old friends and meet some new ones.

Working on some new Illustrations

Sometimes you just need a break.
I've been working on web pages, production designs for coins and pins, business cards and newspaper ads until I can't see straight.
In the midst of all this hectic I've really felt the urge to get a recreational art and illustration in. Last night I just couldn't hold back any longer. I needed my fix. Luckily, my lovely and talented friend Elena Rego over at Lunar Musings has me working on some new designs for her site and supplied me with some of her amazing photography. One of her amazingly gorgeous photos of a pomegranate caught my eye during a break in my website mania and I had to indulge in a little good ol' fashioned digital illustration.
Maybe next week I'll even get the time to actually create some art in the analog world! I've been playing with the idea of turning my vector illustrations into fiber art pieces... I just have to figure out the construction... Sometimes bridging the gap between art forms can really help spur creativity.

When you experiment with an original quilt design, how do you know whether your results look good? You could ask a friend, but if her only response is "That's nice," "I like it" or "it's beautiful," you really haven't gotten any useful feedback. What you need is a good critique.

Critique is a way of participating in the conversation between art and viewer. It is a way that we can help each other and improve our own work. If all that sounds too far outside your comfort zone, let's change the topic from quilts to cooking. When you are trying a new recipe, you taste it, right? You might even call in your husband and ask his opinion. And you really want it, not like when you ask if you look fat in your jeans. You need to know if it is too sweet, salty or bland. Is it appetizing to look at? How does it feel in your mouth? Are the textures all the same? Does it make you feel like you are eating oatmeal? Getting help while you are still creating the dish gives you the chance to make changes so you can serve up something delicious and not something that will feed the garbage disposal.

You can ask these same kinds of questions when you look at a quilt. I am not a trained artist, but I think my opinion is valuable because I have been looking at quilts for a long time. In the last 10 years, I have tried to understand why one quilt excites me and another leaves me cold. Here are some questions to get you started.

Pay attention to your first reaction. Our instinctive, visceral response to something can be as useful as our studied examination. Then again, don’t be like my friend Linda, who always said "I didn’t like it the first time I saw it and I'll never like it." It's good to grow, too!

If you are looking at a photograph online, take the actual size of the piece into consideration. A single flower done as a 3x4 inch miniature will have a much different impact in person than one that is 3x4 feet!

The size will also affect the amount of detail that is possible. An 8x10 inch landscape of several hills and a tree will be adequate to hold our attention but a landscape five times that size would require more details, more changes of value, perhaps even a more dramatic focal point to justify the added space.

How is the piece arranged? Does your eye move naturally over it all? Can you see everything at once and have no desire to look at it more closely? Do the colors engage you, make you feel happy, sad, calm, upset? Do you notice a color repeating across the quilt? Is it always the same shape and same value or does it change, creating both repetition and interest at the same time?

Are there lines that seem to create movement, directing your eye to another part of the quilt? Is the focal point in the center or off to the side? Does that work or would you move it? Why? Do you find the work flat or has depth been created by use of color, scale or even linear perspective? If the work is flat (think Grandma Moses), is that effective?

You can also view a work as part of a progression, whether it is your own or someone else's. Is this piece better than the last one? What makes it better - the subject matter or the skill used in completing it? If there are technical errors, are they distracting from the work as a whole? For example, what if the quilting lines are meant to be straight but are uneven in a way that is clearly a mistake?

I hope you decide to give critique a try. You will find more information in our Library - just look for Critique in the Quilt Terms section. A search on Google for "art critiques" will keep you busy for a long time.

I got this out of my Twice-Weekly Letter from Robert Genn. He is a painter and I love reading what he has to say about art. Today's news letter was about starting out timid (ie a light touch) on your designs and ending with strength and energy. Here is a snippet taken from the letter.

Esoterica:
Creativity means thinking on your feet, making adjustments and sorties as you go along, advancing commitment as well as erasure. Unless you express your wishes, however modestly or timidly, you may never know your power. Your general overall theme may be audacious, even simply audacious, but it is the final, well-planned flourishes that will help your work to fly.

October Member Meeting

We have our general member meeting coming up quickly. This is going to be a busy one. We have several things that we are going to be covering, so we need to be thinking about things in advance

We need to critique the exhibit. What did we like, what could be improved, etc.
We need a theme idea for our special exhibit for next year. Do we want to do a word or phase again or do we want to work with a fabric or embellishment that would have to be included?

Carol mentioned creating a website for the group in addition to the blog. This could be a place where we could have a permanent home for show pictures, etc. Be thinking about what you would want to see on the website. If you have seen websites that you like, please bring those links so we can review those ideas/layouts.
If we create a website we will need to decide on what other sites we will be linking to and also what our overall focus and "face" will be. You know I have changed the look of the blog a lot and will probably continue to have fun with that, but we will need a more consistant look for the website. Be thinking of what you would want to see.

Don't forget to bring any works in progress. If we have time, we will be sharing those.

Photographing 2010 Show

Lots of cameras were flashing at the artist reception opening of the 2010 show! Everyone was very pleased with the bountiful feast that was provided for our opening. (Especially those people that traveled for 3 hours - part of it on the 91 - to attend our show!) Thank you Cynthia for making that heroic effort, and spoil that husband of yours.

We had lots of great compliments on the show this year and some talk of possible sales already on opening night. That is a great testiment of the quality of work this year! There were lots of people really studying the pieces and having a lot of fun guessing who did the pieces of the "No Strings Attached" Exhibit.

Lighting on the pieces this year was great. Every art quilt was properly lighted so that you could really see the details of the stitching. Gail's piece really benefited from the light to show off her fabulous quilting.

Good job everyone! There has been lots of interest in our group already this morning. If we wanted to expand we could add several new members from the inquiries we have gotten.

TEXTURES FIBER ART EXHIBIT - Opening Night Festivities

Textures Fiber Art's Exhibit opening night was a huge success! I think this will be the best show yet! It's true that each year our fiber arts works are impressive; but this year's submittals are all vibrant in color and professionally crafted. A couple quilts are whimsical while others are moving to view. This 2010 show yield two first: a trip-tic piece exquisitely done by Carol Carpenter, Carol Niles and Sharon Reese; secondly the Texture's group displayed a collaboration of 14" x 14" quilt squares with the "No Strings Attached" theme. It was awesome. Check out candid shot of a talented quartet: Sharon Mittry, Carol Niles; Trish Charity and Helene Lohr. Also be mesmerized by a close up view of Trish color dynamic in her quilt. Amazing work.

Textures Group Settings

On Definitions

Bringing together the definitions for our book on Textures Techniques has gotten me thinking on the 'definition' of art.

No matter how we try to describe each technique as accurately as possible, there is something missing from our detailed descriptions. Something essential that the artist themselves bring to the table that remains outside of our best efforts to describe.

The birth of a piece is not the sum of the techniques that the artist used to create it. It is not a recipe : add a dash of reverse appliqué, a teaspoon of threadpainting, a tablespoon of Tsukineko, a cup of hand sewn embellishments – mix in a blender at high speed and voila! You have 'art'!

It is the unique patterns of thought, personality and experience that the artist (and the viewers) bring to the piece which help it become more than a pleasing assembly of color and form and become a way to communicate, to share the way we see/sense/feel the world in, outside and around us.

But how can we define these unique patterns? Even in repetition they change and evolve, react to and shape their context. Even as they echo each other, they are as different and varied as fractals, as the DNA that shapes us all, yet makes us all strikingly unique. There will never be another you, and no one else will ever make the art that comes from the inner workings of your soul in your place in time.

Anyway- I'd better get back to work!

David has used it in some new pieces of work and he loves it all. The Spagetti line is amazing. Looks great on the quilt and sews beautifully. We will try to post a picture later so you can see what he used and what it looks like.

Tic-Toc for the Opening...

Is everyone getting excited? Are you ready for the quilt photos to be taken on Friday the 24th? Don’t forget your time slot and try to get there a little early. If you don’t remember, please contact Carol N. Last year Sharon and Gail were very efficient and got through the photo process very quickly.

Remember to have your art quilt blocked (if it is supposed to be square) and press out any wrinkles. We want to have gorgeous photos for the book Gail is putting together. You might also want to check it for stray threads and pet hair. We don’t want to try to explain any of THOSE design features.

I hope all of you have been handing out your postcards to friends and family. I know we have! I even had to leave another batch at the Visions gallery (I mean MUSEUM! – name change and other big doings on that front).

If you have a new Bio photo you would want Gail to use, make sure you get it to her.

I found these photos of a Batik studio we saw in St. Lucia on our recent vacation. Of course I thought of all of you! It is set up in this old Victorian house that is perched on a hillside with amazing views of the ocean. They have a nice demo area inside the store, and a workshop with some beautiful works-in-progress. Very fun!

IQF Long Beach

Well, the show is over and is was fantastic! Trish and I bumped into some of the friends that we only get to see occasionally, Pokey Bolton, Jamie Fingal and Jane LaFazio to name a few.

The quilts were great and sitting at the Quilts on the Wall table with our exhibit Journeys was an opportunity to network with new artists.

One of the interesting things at the show was an opportunity to meet the gals with Wonderfil threads. Trisha and Donna were so friendly and helpful in discussing their new line of threads. Of special interest to me was their new metallics and a thread called spaghetti. The metallics are not cotton core but a wound poly so that they feel very smooth. The spaghetti line is a brightly rich color 12wt which Trisha swears can be run through the top needle with a 90/14 top stitch needle. I will be trying these threads on my newest design for a bridges exhibit and will report on my experiences.

Another thing of interest was meeting the founder and coordinator of an African-American children's quilt group based out of Corona. They put on a biannual show and she told me she would be interested in our group having a booth at their next show.

SAQA Reception

David, Carol, Gail, Linda, Sandra, Muna and I were able to attend the SAQA reception at Long Beach on Friday night. It was a great time. Not only did we get to have wonderful food and wine but we got to reconnect with a lot of people that we hadn't seen since last year and meet some new friends. Mary was also there but sitting with other friends at their table.

Several people got up to show what they are currently working on (David included) and they were all wonderful pieces. It is fun to see how much diversity there is in the art quilt world.

After the reception, 10 of us headed off for dinner at Gladstone's and got to know a possible future Textures member, Catherine. She is very nice and that was confirmed when we found out she owns 4 basenji's and is very good friends with the breeder that my sister and I got our dogs from. How cool is that?

I hope to post some pictures later (on someone else's camera) of the blue smurf man we made out of the cotton candy that Carol got us for David and my anniversary. We were all laughing so hard our stomachs hurt.

Off to the show to torture our feet some more.

Can you say LONG BEACH?!!!

Way too cool! This is the weekend of the Long Beach Quilt Show put on by Quilts, Inc. This is going to be a really great show again this year I just know it.

I was so happy to hear that SAQA was going to have their members event again this year. It is incredibly inspiring to meet members in person that you only see on their websites or blogs and to see their work up close and in person when they bring it to share at the event.

I know that several members of Textures are planning on attending the show and the SAQA event so I am looking forward to lots of smiling faces. I hope every gets inspired with new techniques from the Make It University of Quilting Arts and Cloth, Paper, Scissors. Hopefully some of us will win the lottery and get our names pulled for some of the classes.

Stop by the Quilts on the Wall table and say Hi and see the special exhibit. I think we are going to be about in the same area as last year.

Earthquake in SO CAL.

And it was a big one! Just getting on the internet when it hit. Will let you know but about as big a one as what the Landers quake felt like but not as much. It did a lot of shaking and rolled a bit, but nothing fell off the shelves and my wine (a wonderful Granache from Leonesse) did not spill.

"Out of the Ruins, A Nation Thrives" was one of 25 quilts accepted for the special exhibition "Wonders of the World" to premier at International Quilt Festival, Houston next fall. The group of quilts will later travel to Cincinnati in April and Long Beach in July, 2011. From there, who knows where they will send it, but they will have it for 3 years.

Needless to say, since this quilt and "Hope Springs Eternal" (West Coast Wonders) will both be at Houston, Phyllis is getting her plane tickets soon. One more is still "pending" for Houston.

Rose Hughes' book signing - Huge Success!

Last evening, I had the good fortune to attend the lavish book signing party at the home of notated quilter and author Rose Hughes. "Exploring Embellishments" is Rose's latest book installment; this time exploring how to adorn our quilts with all sorts of beads, buttons, yarn embellishments and clever techniques on how to apply them. On hand at the signing were many of the guest artist in the book including Textures own David and Trish Charity and Muna Elias. It was great fun to chat with each artist and hear their own techniques for completing their respective featured works.

Rose aka "the raven" is a wonderful host. She was very gracious with given a few of us a overview of the history of her raven collection and how her fascination with this intriguing bird began and has become an often featured symbol in her quilt art. If you're a lover of wildly creative fun when quilting, then the purchase of Exploring Embellishments is a must. You can definitely purchase Rose's book on her website at www.rosehughes.com and quite possibly through other book sellers i.e Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc.

June Meeting

We had a great meeting last night. Carol, as usual, was a great facilitator even though some of us did a little too much sidebar talking during the sharing of new work at the end of the meeting! There was some great things shown - I think it is going to be our best show yet. I really like the idea of our little side exhibit "No Strings Attached". This is going to be really fun to see them all hanging together.

We have a lot of things that need to get done in the last few months before the show (finishing our quilts for one). Everyone has their jobs assigned and are clear on what needs to be accomplished and when. Don't forget that we have a great deal of talent in all areas of our group. If you are struggling with any ideas on the best way to do your job or streamline the process, then give a shout out to the group.

I for one will ask for help in the area of promotion. I have several places on the internet that I will be posting to soon for event calendars, but if you have a favorite site you go to for information on art venues, please send me an email and give me the address. It may be one that I have not thought of. This also includes any groups, etc that you belong to that would be willing to post our information on their blog or website. I will be creating or adding to a page where I will list the areas where I have submitted. If you would be so kind to check out the listings later to make sure they are accurate and "live" that would be great. Plus having "clicks" on the links might also help us get promoted.

There was lots of member news that was shared at the meeting last night. I EXPECT to see some of you posting about the wonderful things that have been going on in your art life. You all promised you would.

Maybe it's just me, but every once in a while I need a change. Since it seems I am currently the only one posting (wasn't everyone going to try to do this once a month?) I decided it needed a new look.

Rose Hughes Book Signing

Shoot Your Artwork Like a Pro

Digital cameras and photo-imaging software have made it quite easy to take pictures and distribute them on blogs, in social media, and even in print magazines. But perhaps you sometimes wonder why some people's pictures come out clear, sharp, and colorful while others—maybe yours?—look dark and fuzzy. Or have shadows in all the wrong places.
Especially when shooting your artwork, you want the result to look as professional as possible. So I asked our design director, Larissa Davis, to share some of her tips on how to take better pictures of your art.
8 Tips from a Pro

Take the photos with natural lighting, if at all possible. A flash causes shadows and glare. Soft, northern light is best. If the light inside isn't optimum, take your subject outside; this works best if it is a slightly overcast day.

Shoot with the light behind you. Whenever possible, take your photo from a vantage point where your back is to the light. Don't shoot “into” the light; your subject will be in shadow.
Use a tripod or other method of stabilizing the camera. Otherwise, use a steady hand. This is especially important with close-ups.

Remove distractions. Take a look in your view finder and look at what's around your subject. Is there a plant behind it? Papers off to the side that you don't want in the picture? Remove any objects that aren't there to enhance the photo.
Neutral doesn't mean boring. It's usually best to photograph your artwork against a neutral background. But that doesn't have to be a white wall. Something with texture, such as Japanese paper or a nubby linen tablecloth can make the subject pop and give it a context.
Vary your angles. Try taking a faraway shot, a close shot, and a detail shot of each element. Shoot from above and from below.

Give it some scale. If you're shooting your artwork for selling purposes, especially, it can be a good idea to style your piece with another object that shows the scale. This could be a tulip, a button, a hand (with the object in the palm), or a house, depending on the piece.

Use a light box. A light box is a professional photographer's tool that reduces glare and shadows and makes it easier to trace and edit your images digitally. A light box also helps bring out the details in your artwork. Fortunately, you can easily and inexpensively make one at home. In the Summer 2010 issue of Studios, artist and photographer Ivy Demos shows you two methods of making a light box with materials you can find at your local discount or hardware store.

Handy Hint for Healthy Fabric Painting

I discovered this wonderful tip while helping one of my friends do some fabric painting. She is going off soon to a family retreat to paint fabric and quilt for a week. As she has not worked with some of the paints, I offered to help her paint some samples and work out the kinks so she could show her sisters and Mom.

This was a lot of fun and we got some really interesting fabrics using Stewart Gills, SetaColors and Jacquard paints.

Now here’s the tip: while snipping the fabric so you can tear it into reasonable sized pieces, DO NOT drop the scissors point side down on your toe. This is a very important tip, especially if you are wearing flip-flops. AND, extremely important if you are going to be wearing 3-1/2 inch heals that night to another friends birthday party. AND you had planned to do some dancing with your husband.

Just something to keep in mind the next time you decide to paint fabric…..

Coming Soon: Supplies page

I will be creating a supplies page on the blog this weekend. This will
be for things we have tried and things we want to try. We can also post
results of experiments with different products. What brought this about
was going back through some of my older copies of Quilting Arts and
Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazines and seeing products I did not remember
seeing the first time through.

To this end: Please send me a list of things to include on the page. I
will be starting out with supplies that I have worked with and supplied
that have been demonstrated in the group. I will also include things
that I pick up out of the various magazine articles and advertisements.
If there is something that has a web address, please send that also.

If there is feedback for a page for fabric suppliers, I will also create
a page just for that. That could be for commercial fabrics and hand dyed
or custom type fabrics.

This is a sharing and experimentation group so let's get all that
information in one place so we don't have to search the 'net each time
we want to find something one of the other members has mentioned or used.

Added new links

I added some new links on the Link page. One is a link to a blog that has a whole bunch of great informational articles all in one place. They are nicely grouped so you can quickly find what you are looking for. This covers all sorts of things from why you need to be on the web and what to do once you are there.

The ScribblerToo is just a really fun site for drawing. You can create cool looking art with just a few swipes and swoops of the "pen". You can change colors and pen settings. Once you get a wonderful thing you love, save it to your computer as a png file.

New Artist Business Items

I have added a new link to a site for a gallery. The link is actually for the products that this gallery owner offers.

I have purchased the book "Starving" to Successful | The Fine Artist's Guide to Getting into Galleries and selling More Art". It is geared more to the fine art people but it has great information that we can use in our pursuits if we wish to get into a gallery situation or present a more professional attitude in our work.

I am also going to purchase the software for tracking a customer base. It is called "Art Tracker". It is customizable so you can remove the references to oils, acrylics, etc and add your own types and descriptions such as silk, cotton, collage, etc. Check out the link and go through the demo screens for how versatile this program is. I originally was going to try to create my own tracking system but this does exactly what I want and I don't have to spend hours and hours working on that when I could be in the studio.

I have talked to them via email and they are very responsive and helpful.

If any one is thinking or is already selling to galleries or private collectors, Art Tracker is a great program to use, and the book gives you all the in's and out's from the gallery perspective. It is very helpful to know what they are looking for in the way of presented pieces and professionalism. This will put you miles ahead when you approach a gallery for representation or even a private client.

SAQA meeting / Textures meeting

The SAQA meeting yesterday for the So. CA area was fantastic. We got to
see some wonderful quilts that will be going into the INK SPOT venue in
San Diego. There will be a reception that everyone will be invited to,
so I will be sending out a notice on that one. It should be a lot of fun
with some fabulous quilts. There were some incredible uses of art fabrics.
There is also the opportunity of going down a little early and visiting
some specialty stores before the reception. It is always fun to go to
Dick Blick, or Artists and Craftsman, or any of the wonderful shops in
the San Diego Old Town area that have fabric and beads. Of course there
is also The Container Store to get more containers for all the stuff you
need to organized!

We had a wonderful Textures meeting on Friday and I hope that some of
you will post opinions on what you thought about the meeting! (Besides
Linda looking incredibly happy!)

SAQA Meeting on Sat April 17th

Successful February Meeting

I think we can all agree that we had a very successful meeting. We covered a lot of topics and got some things defined for our membership requirements. I do believe that establishing membership at 15 was a great idea as there is now no possibility of "tie" votes and it still keeps us small enough to remain in our current location. We cannot fit even one more person in there!

We reviewed the list of possible new members and voted on who we felt would be a good fit both for what they can add to the group and what we can share with her. Our new guest member will be notified that she can now start attending meetings and get a feel for the group. In December/January she will be asked if she would like to be a full member. If she decides the group is a good fit for her then she will be able to participate in all Textures events next year.

How fun was it to celebrate Linda's upcoming nuptials with all that great food? I have a very cute picture of her in her bridal veil. Just need permission to post it. Linda?

There were also some wonderful quilts shared and critiqued. I think we are all starting to stretch our wings from our first show. Once I get the list of the workshop requests from Carol, I can post them and then we can vote on them with our comments.
